But it’s interacting with everyday people that Doyle loves best. On Saturdays and on St. Patrick’s Day and New Year’s Day. On those occasions, the bar is often packed with his regulars who’ve become friends and his friends who’ve become regulars. McGillin’s made history – celebrated 150th anniversary with giant party, visit from Budweiser Clydesdales and introduction of McGillin’s 1860 IPA. There is a ship bell and a cow bell behind the bar which the bartenders ring when they get a great tip.

Don’t expect lighting-speed service if your visit falls during a weekend or weeknight special (which is basically every day, considering there’s always something on offer). That said, the staff hustle hard to keep service moving. If you can, seek out a barstool in front of barman John Doyle, who’s as much legend as the place itself (he’s been behind the bar at McGillin’s for more than 40 years). Get your Christmas spirit (& spirits) at McGillin’s, Philadelphia’s original pop up bar with over-the-top decor since 1860 and holiday drink prices that don’t pop UP during the holidays. Make it a tradition to stop by before/after shopping & Christmas shows for meal/drinks. McGillin’s Olde Ale House is like a Winter Wonderland with hundreds of ornaments, bows and strings of lights.

His first job was “huckstering,” or selling tomatoes, bananas, and other produce door-to-door as a kid. From there, he worked at a Dairy Queen, a soda shop, and sold newspapers at Municipal Stadium. And that’s how Doyle, 79, a married father of two and grandfather of four, came to be the longest-serving bartender at Philly’s oldest-operating bar.

They married in 1970 and had twin daughters six years later. When Doyle’s wife stopped working to take care of the kids, his part-time job at McGillin’s helped supplement their income. Doyle, who lives in Andorra, was born in South Philly and raised in the Tasker Homes, where he was the middle child of seven in an Irish-Catholic family. But his big break came when the downstairs bartender broke a bottle over an unruly customer’s head (the patron had reached behind the bar to serve himself). Doyle had to cover the bar when his coworker was hauled out by police in handcuffs. Doyle was so stoic and observant that the staff thought he was a cop.

This month marks 50 years for Doyle atMcGillin’s, which opened on Drury Street near 13th in 1860,and in true Philly fashion, the bar is throwing a yearlong partyin his honor. Festivities begin Saturday, with an open-to-all party featuring surprise guests at the bar from noon to 5 p.m. Celebrations will continue throughout the year, with specials like Doyle dollar dog days, and will culminate on St. Patrick’s Day.

But don’t be fooled by the mild-mannered demeanor of this thin, blue-eyed barkeep. The celebration begins this Saturday at McGillin’s and culminates next St. Patrick’s Day, which will be Doyle’s 50th at the bar, said Christopher Mullins Jr., co-owner of McGillin’s. Inspired by his new gig, Doyle attended a six-week course at Ronnie’s Bartending School (he still keeps a tiny laminated copy of his 1975 diploma in his wallet) and began tending the bar upstairs at McGillin’s.

Get your Halloween boo-ze at Philly’s oldest bar, where we have real ghosts, skeletons in our closet, drink specials and over the top Halloween decor! John Doyle is considered an icon in Philadelphia. The beloved McGillin's bartender is credited with being a matchmaker, saving marriages and pouring countless drinks while working at Philadelphia's oldest continually operating tavern. Doyle’s service even impresses first-time customers. He once served two men a couple of martinis and some stout beers and was shocked when they left him a $500 tip — his biggest ever — which he split with the other bartender working that day.

With four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms in its 2,512 square feet, it's asking $798,000. Maybe this Boyle Heights house does have too many extras to mention, but would it have killed them to list one or two? The remodeled three-bedroom house built in 1890 is listed for $314,000.

McGillin’s served blue beer in honor of Villanova’s National Basketball Championship in 2016 and again in 2018. During the week Philadelphia hosted the DNC, McGillin’s hosted MSNBC’s morning show “Morning Joe” hosted by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski. Local and National politicians visited McGillin’s throughout the week, the highlight was President Joe Biden (then Vice President) and Vice President Kamala Harris (then Attorney General of California). Le Bec Fin, which kicked off Philadelphia’s restaurant renaissance in 1970, closes and its sign is added to collection at McGillin’s. Fox News named McGillin’s to the list of Top Irish Pubs in the U.S.

In 1936, on her 89th & last birthday, she gave out nearly 4,000 carnations. McGillin’s is only closed a few days a year  – and Thanksgiving is one of them. Stop by on July 14 to celebrate Bastille Day with half priced French Onion Soup. Pair with a glass of red wine   – only $6 all day every day.

This month marks 50 years for Doyle at McGillin’s, which opened on Drury Street near 13th in 1860, and in true Philly fashion, the bar is throwing a yearlong party in his honor. That was the extent of Doyle’s application and interview process. A few weeks later, in April 1974, he was asked to work Friday nights as a doorman and agreed.

They now own the historic tavern with their son, Christopher Mullins, Jr. McGillin’s Olde Ale House opened in 1860 and has survived not 1, but 2 pandemics — one in 1918 and the other in 2020! Owner Chris Mullins, Sr. locked the doors on March 16, 2020 (1 day before St Patrick’s Day) and then gleefully re-opened them about a year later. Modelo has paired with the International Rescue Committee, an NGO that responds to humanitarian crises and helps people rebuild their lives. More than 100 years ago, Christopher’s grandparents immigrated to America making McGillin’s especially proud to be part of this campaign that helps immigrants get a fighting chance here.

Daring Fireball: Local Note: 'McGillin's Bartender John Doyle Marks 50 Years at Philly's Oldest Bar'

The storied heritage and classic pub ambience draw all types of bar-goers, from college kids avoiding the library to young professionals grabbing after-work beers, families catching an Eagles game, to retirees. They belly up to the bar, reliving the glory days. Generally speaking, McGillin’s gets progressively louder, busier, and younger as the night goes on. Troegs Independent Brewing became the official brewer of McGillin’s 3 house beers – McGillin’s Real Ale, McGillin’s Genuine Lager & McGillin’s 1860 IPA.

Fortunately, there was minimal damage to the 1st floor tavern. The band was playing “Light My Fire” as smoke filled the room and the crowd left in an orderly fashion, some even stopping to blow out the candles on their tables. In 2016 we installed a sprinkler system to ensure we’ll be around for years to come. McGillin’s Olde Ale House celebrates 100th anniversary. Thousands of soldiers and sailors pass through McGillin’s doors on their way to the front. Serves food and ice cream and perhaps, a few tea cups were tipped on the second floor.

The Sons of Ben began during a flurry of rumors regarding Major League Soccer’s negotiations with investors regarding a potential team in the Philadelphia region. Catherine & William McGillin opened the Bell in Hand Tavern. The Irish immigrants, who raised their 13 children upstairs, soon become known as “Ma” and “Pa” and the laborers who frequented the bar called it “McGillin’s.” The nicknames eventually stuck.

Bryan James, Andrew Dillon, and David Flagler founded the Sons of Ben supporters club on January 17, 2007, the 301st anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s birthday. Philadelphia soccer fan Ethan Gomberg suggested the name. The Sons of Ben are the first Philadelphia Union supporters club, and use the Philadelphia civic colors of light blue and yellow as opposed to the darker shades officially used by the team.

Besides being one of the oldest bars in Philly, McGillin’s in Midtown Village is also the entire city’s favorite place to day drink and watch sports. If you’re in Philly during football or baseball season and can’t get tickets to the real thing, there’s no better place to be. They also have a fireplace, so it’s especially useful in the winter when all of the outdoor beer gardens are closed and day drinking options have dwindled.

McGillin's Olde Ale House starts year-long celebration for bartender's 50th work anniversary

Take a break from the boxy, glassy, Tuscan, tricked-out, brand-new houses for a minute and have a look at 17 of the oldest houses for sale in LA and the San Gabriel Valley. All built in 1900 or before, there are Victorians and Craftsmans on the list, some beautifully maintained, a flip or two, houses that needs some love, and a million-dollar teardown in Hollywood. The care and commitment to maintaining a 120-year old house isn't for everyone, but if you love wide shady porches, backyard gazebos, pressed-tin ceilings, and crazy paint jobs, there might be something for you.

So one night when the doorman had to use the bathroom, he asked Doyle to watch the door and he did. “I would stand by the door, look around, and just have a couple of drinks,” he said. PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- McGillin's Olde Ale House, considered the oldest continuously-operating tavern in Philadelphia, has a 164-year-long history. You can watch the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers Flyers and Union in a historic Philadelphia bar packed full of life-long fans that want a win more than anything. If you can get a seat, McGillin’s is a great place to watch the big game while you’re in town.

We try to keep this listed up-to-date but please forgive us if it’s not 100% updated. "I met Chase Utley, Moose Johnston came in one night," Doyle recalled. "The truth is the people, I love meeting people." "When I first started working here, I didn't know how long I'd be here. Then I got the job as a doorman, eventually, I became a bartender," Doyle said.

McGillin’s celebrates 50th anniversary with a new façade. Name officially changes to McGillin’s Olde Ale House. Civil War ends, Union Soldiers, grateful for their survival and for their hard fought victory, return to McGillin’s to celebrate with Pop McGillin’s  cellared ales. Although Lincoln visits Philadelphia, we have no proof that he visits McGillin’s. Of course, we have no proof that he doesn’t either.

McGillin’s Genuine Lager – Can only be found at McGillin’s and Troegs Independent Brewing. This golden Helles lager is smooth and satisfying with a clean malt character reminiscent of fresh-baked bread. German hops add a hint of floral notes and subtle bitterness, while lager yeast lends a crisp, refreshing finish.

Sign added to McGillin’s collection of iconic signs. When it closes in 2008, its sign is added to McGillin’s sign collection. No pushover, Ma has a list of troublemakers who weren’t allowed in. The list reads like the social registry, including some of Philadelphia’s most prominent citizens.

Philadelphia’s history is some of the most fascinating in the United States. Not only did our city lay the framework for the founding of our country, but we set precedents with our shops, architecture, bars, restaurants, and more. It’s no surprise then that the oldest bar in Philadelphia has a fascinating history, and it remains one of Philly’s go-to spots nearly 160 years after it opened. The bar stocks a great selection of local beers like Yuengling, Yards and Victory, while the televisions are always tuned to the most important local sporting event. While young 20-somethings fill the place for karaoke on Friday nights, happy hours at McGgillin’s are typically filled with a very diverse crowd. The Sons of Ben, a supporter group of Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union, was created at McGillin’s!

He’s also met Chase Utley, watched Jason Kelce play cards in McGillin’s, and worked the bar during the Phillies 2008 World Series parade, the busiest day he’s ever seen. He started going to the storied Center City bar regularly on Friday nights in the early ‘70s, when his wife would go to her mother’s house to do laundry. Located on a tiny alley around the corner from City Hall, McGillin’s should be on your list if you’re looking for an authentic Philadelphia spot for a relaxed dinner or friendly drinks. McGillin’s once again served green beer, in an unsuccessful effort to replicate the Eagles’ win of 2018. This sad-looking house is headed for a probate sale later this month, and is listed for $515,000. The five bedroom house is 2,100 square feet and not too far from USC, and looks like it might scrub up nice.

From 1995 until its closure in 2020, the beers were brewed by Stoudt’s Brewing. At one time, McGillin’s sold more Stoudt’s beer than any other bar in PA. Shortly after the Liberty Bell cracked and long before ground was broken for City Hall, McGillin’s Olde Ale House threw open its doors. Its beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia. McGillin’s has outlasted Strawbridge’s, the Civil War and even Prohibition. McGillin’s celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010.

Doyle earned a "Best of Philly" award in 2010 when he was named the city's best bartender, and his wife, Laura Doyle, said all these years later she doesn't mind sharing him with the rest of the city. As Doyle gets ready to turn 80, he's scaled back his schedule to one day a week, but he's now worked for three generations of owners, and his tenure has spanned eight Philadelphia mayors. He's also served then Vice President Joe Biden and many other national politicians, athletes and celebrities. And that’s how Doyle, 79, a married father of two and grandfatherof four, came to be the longest-serving bartender at Philly’soldest-operating bar.

Today, the team at the Meyer Werft shipyard cut the first piece of steel for the Disney Treasure. Sparks were flying as a special machine called a plasma cutter, which is housed within the yard’s laser cutting room, was used to cut the steel in the shape of a Disney cruise ship. The ceremony was a huge milestone for Disney Imagineers and crew building the Disney Treasure, marking the official start of construction.

Serving as Disney Cruise Line’s first venue inspired by the spellbinding adventure of Walt Disney’s 1954 film, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and the celebrated Disney Parks attraction that was open at Walt Disney World from 1971 to 1994. The design of the submarine-style interiors will call upon 19th century steampunk influences with polished metals and industrial touches. A mysterious window into the depths of the uncharted oceans along the ceiling will make guests feel like Captain Nemo on the Nautilus, while a decorative statement rug in the center of the space will honor Captain Nemo’s fabled nemesis, the giant squid. This casual venue will be the ideal onboard locale for guests to unwind and watch live sports and news, while ordering from a menu of craft brews and light bites. The voyage begins when Captain Minnie hands over the helm to her dear friend Goofy as he sets sail into uncharted waters on a journey to discover his own inner captain during Disney Seas the Adventure which debuted on the Disney Wish in 2022. On Disney Treasure, one restaurant will be new to the fleet and two will return from Disney Wish, but with a slightly different spin. For an even more luxurious experience, the Disney Treasure has four royal suites that were inspired by beloved Disney cat characters from movies such as “The Jungle Book” And “Aladdin”. Those who are planning a luxury cruise will appreciate the concierge-level staterooms and suites. Guests staying there can hang out in an exclusive concierge lounge that has its own private sun deck where they will be served refreshments throughout the day. The concierge-level suites feature design and décor inspired by the interiors inspired by “The Lion King”.

Design

The Tale of Moana will begin in modern day on the fictional island of Motunui, in a set design filled with hints of brilliant cultures of the Pacific Islands that will appear throughout the show. The Tale of Moana will feature puppetry that soars to mythical heights, including a fiery Te Kā on a scale Disney Cruise Line has never before produced. When Moana meets Te Kā and restores the heart of Te Fiti, the giant Te Kā puppet will shed its fiery shell and become the gentle island goddess, Te Fiti herself. As you can see from the concept art, the columns and the centerpiece atrium light fixture are designed to evoke Aladdin, while also retaining a luxurious and modern appearance. That’s a really tough needle to thread, as usually these are two very different types of architecture–I’d normally expect Agrabah to feature a lot of ornate detail, patterns, and texture. Still, I’m hopeful and optimistic that Imagineering can stick the landing on this, as the concept is really intriguing and much better, in my view, than the atrium of the Wish.

This ship’s ride is centered around a brand-new storyline for Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse as they search for treasure in an ancient temple. The two-person ride vehicles carry guests from the upper decks through 760 feet of winding tubes. No specifics were provided as to the substance of the suite that’ll be pulled from the park, so it sounds probably more like it’ll be a vibe. Our expectation is that it’ll feature modern style, and maybe some geodesic patterns here or there. Hopefully there’s more to it than that, but I don’t think we can expect to see Figment or nods to Horizons–this is a super expensive suite that needs to appeal to affluent cruisers with zero knowledge of the parks.

The Disney Treasure is based on the theme of “adventure” and will feature an Aladdin themed Grand Hall design. Disney Treasure, hull number 718, was built at Meyer Werft in Germany and will set sail in December 2024. The sixth ship will be powered by clean-burning liquefied natural gas and be the same as the Disney Wish and ship 7 – 343 meters, approximately 140,000 gross tons with 1,250 guest staterooms planned for a maximum 4000 passengers – which is slightly larger than the Dream class. Today the Disney Parks Blog updated the Disney Treasure ship’s log with a new construction milestone in Germany.

Other adult-exclusive spaces on board the Disney Treasure will include the Quiet Cove pool district, a variety of gourmet cafes, relaxed bars and upscale lounges, and more. The Haunted Mansion Parlor will follow the nostalgic art style of the original 1969 Disneyland classic. True to the original attraction, the lounge aboard the Disney Treasure will blend humor with Imagineering’s distinct brand of spooky storytelling. The design of the Haunted Mansion Parlor will be reminiscent of a first-class drawing room from the classic cruise liners of the golden age, invoking inspiration from the original Haunted Mansion with a nautical twist. Let’s take a look at the different entertainment spaces aboard the Disney Treasure, starting with the Grand Hall atrium (above and below) that’ll first greet guests as they come aboard the ship.

As the Disney Treasure takes form, this moment marks the first time that the iconic silhouette of the ship can be recognized. As with all ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, the Disney Treasure takes its inspiration from classic ocean liners of the early 20th century with a modern flair. With today’s installment of the bridge block, the Disney Treasure now has everything it needs to sail through waterways around the world. The bridge block contains important navigational equipment for the ship, including the wheel! The future captain and their crew will be able to control the ship’s direction and speed from an onboard command center that looks out towards the horizon with floor to ceiling windows.

Teenagers sailing on the Disney Treasure will have their own dedicated club called Vibe, a stylish space inspired by a French artists’ loft with classic architecture, vibrant neon signs and funk pop art, including a selfie-worthy Mickey Mouse statue. Aboard the Disney Treasure, children will embark on Disney adventures of their own with dedicated spaces and interactive programming for every age group – infants and toddlers, children, tweens and teens. Marceline Market will return offering guests an ever-changing menu along with ocean views from both indoor and outdoor seating. Named for Walt Disney’s early childhood hometown in Missouri, Marceline Market will be a stylish food hall aboard the Disney Treasure inspired by popular marketplaces from around the world. From bunnies and elephants to sloths and foxes, all are welcome to indulge in more than 20 flavors of handmade gelato, 16 flavors of ice cream and sorbets, specialty treats, candies and more. On the first night, the story of Miguel and his familia will continue where it left off on screen as they gather in Mariachi Plaza to take guests on a colorful, music-filled journey that celebrates family memories and togetherness.

This is different from the itineraries on Disney Wish, which are three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas. The longer itineraries will give guests more time to enjoy the ship, so Disney has to create more experiences to keep them entertained. Disney has announced that the maiden voyage for Disney Treasure will be Dec. 21, 2024, on a seven-night sailing from Port Canaveral (near Orlando), Florida. It will visit Tortola, St. Thomas and Castaway Cay (Disney's private island), with three sea days to rest up from your adventures ashore. Disney Treasure will have 1,256 cabins and suites ranging from interior cabins to a two-story funnel suite. All of them will continue the theme of adventure told through Disney stories and places.

This production will immerse audiences in a transformational adventure across land and sea. In addition to the return of two beloved Disney Cruise Line rotational restaurant concepts found on the Disney Wish (1923 and Worlds of Marvel), the Disney Treasure will introduce a brand-new family entertainment restaurant. The shipyard team moved the new build as it needed to make room for the Disney Destiny, the sister ship to the Disney Wish and the Disney Treasure! This milestone is an exciting moment for everyone at Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering, signifying continued progress on the Disney Treasure and celebrating the ongoing expansion of the fleet.

Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club members can book a Disney Treasure cruise as early as September 12, 2023 when tired booking begins for Pearl Members, with general booking open to all on September 20, 2023. But don't despair if that's out of range, as there are much less expensive ways to sail on Disney Treasure — though with only weeklong cruises on offer, there are no bargain basement prices to be found. Outside of the maiden voyages, Disney Treasure inside-cabin fares start at $3,845 for double occupancy or $6,271 for a family of four. Verandah cabins start at close to $8,000 for a family, and concierge cabins start around $15,000.

It’s a thrilling time for the Disney Treasure as more and more pieces of the ship arrive. In my later years, I served proudly as Captain of a luxurious ocean liner, every voyage its own adventure. Part of Rolly’s larger creative concept for a “Museum of the Weird” in the Haunted Mansion, his original vision included a character that appeared to be melting like a candle.

On September 5, 2023, Disney Cruise Line shared a first look at their newest ship, the Disney Treasure, set to embark on December 21, 2024. The Disney Treasure, similar to the Disney Wish, has 1,250 staterooms, along with several restaurants, immersive spaces and experiences themed to various Disney characters and properties, including Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and Pixar. The ship will feature a Coco-themed restaurant, a Tomorrow Tower Suite inspired by EPCOT and a Jungle Cruise-inspired lounge. I have a bunch of other layout quibbles with the Disney Wish, many of which I’m assuming won’t be resolved. The Disney Treasure was well into development by the time the Disney Wish set sail, and it was probably too late to change the core layout by that point. So I’m guessing there won’t be more elevators, added hallways, or significant shuffling of features.

How to Choose a Room: Ultimate Guide to Carnival Staterooms

best staterooms on cruise ships

After a day, and night of fun and kid-friendly dining, head back to a comfy stateroom that suits your family. Here's your guide to picking the best rooms on a cruise ship based on your travel preferences and lifestyle. Brilliance of the Seas makes it impossible to feel bored during a vacation! These top things to do onboard this beloved cruise ship make it a fan favorite for many.

Best Spa cabins

While between destinations, most guests opt to spend their time lounging around the pool, taking in the sun, enjoying a beverage, and soaking in the water. One effective strategy to navigate these poolside crowds is to book your cabin as close to the pool deck as you can. They deliver mesmerizing views as your ship pulls out of ports of call, and their balconies tend to be larger than those on the sides of the ship.

When choosing a room, you will need to look at if it's on a higher deck versus lower deck, as well as midship versus forward or aft. A good rule of thumb when choosing a room is picking one that has no public spaces directly one deck above or one deck below it. You'd be surprised how affordable two connecting rooms can be versus booking a single larger room to fit 4 or 5 people. If you're cruising with kids, I cannot understate enough the benefits of connecting cabins instead of one large cabin. For a lot of people, the best cabin is located wherever the price is right. As a general rule of thumb, a cabin in the middle of the ship is a winner for most people.

The Best Holiday Destinations To Visit This Season Royal Caribbean Cruises

Aside from the four full bathrooms and the half-bath off the living room, the suite has floor-to-ceiling windows on both decks, providing a great view of the ship from the suite. The idea of being out of your door and straight into an elevator is one that will appeal to passengers who plan on accessing several areas of the ship during their cruise. And, if you're traveling with younger children or older party members who have difficulty climbing stairs, a cabin close to the elevators could be a real game changer for your trip. Of course, these rooms are located in high-traffic areas, with people coming and going from the elevators all day — and sometimes into the night. However, if you're a deep sleeper and don't mind the odd noise, grabbing a cabin near the elevators could be your cruise masterstroke.

That cabin placement allows the easiest access to the ship’s main features like dining and large entertainment venues. More importantly, that placement allows crew-assisted evacuation in an emergency. Best Ships for Cruisers with DisabilitiesIt's possible for cruisers with disabilities to enjoy a stress-free vacation.

Some cruise lines offer cruise cabin guarantee fares, which are typically the cheapest rate you can get for a cabin in any category. You're guaranteed (hence the name) a room on the ship in the category you paid for — or higher. Norwegian's Studio cabins have access to an exclusive lounge where single travelers can meet and mingle and grab snacks. On Oceania's new ship Vista, solo cabin occupants will have concierge-level perks and privileges, including concierge lounge access. Some cruise lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, create special restaurants, lounges and sun decks exclusive to suite residents.

Concierge Staterooms (Most Expensive Main Category)

Take your best European vacation with access to the top secret vacation spots to visit when traveling in Europe. If all of this has made sense up until now, here are two other stateroom options that may change up your decision, while potentially saving you money. Ultimately, where your room is located on the ship (midship versus forward or aft) is an arguably more important consideration than the side of the ship.

Category 9 – Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom (All Disney Cruise Ships)

best staterooms on cruise ships

These are all questions to consider when you’re choosing what deck is best for you. The Elite Ocean View stateroom features two convertible beds, a balcony facing the sea, and cozy touches to make it feel like home. Two beds can convert into a comfortable queen, plus creative storage solutions mean you can spread out and enjoy the space. This level of accommodation includes an immersive sliding glass door ocean experience. Follow these four steps to choose the best rooms on a cruise ship for your desired vacation, ambiance, and overall experience. Avoid cabins near the front (bow) or back (stern) and on decks higher than the middle deck of the ship.

For Stability and Seasickness on a Cruise, Stick Low and Central

The vast majority of balcony rooms are standard balcony cabins or slightly larger rooms along either side of a cruise ship -- the port and starboard sides. It's hard to beat a direct sea view (or port view in some cases), and equally wonderful to leave a ship's public areas and soak up the sun, views, or breezes from the comfort of your own cabin. The Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah on Disney cruises is a fantastic choice for your family cruise. With enough space to comfortably sleep 3-4 guests and an unobstructed verandah, this room type is perfect for enjoying the beautiful view. The Concierge Wish Tower Suite and the Concierge Royal Suite are the ship’s most spacious and lavishly appointed rooms.

Still, there are some broad categories of cabin locations on cruise ships that always are in high demand due to their prime locations. If you’re a light sleeper, the best place for you to stay on a cruise ship is in a room surrounded by other cabins. That means you have a cabin on either side of you and cabin decks above and below you. While it is always possible to hear TV noise or crying babies in adjacent rooms, cabins are much quieter than popular public areas that get lots of foot traffic by passengers and crew. Cabins at the back of the ship are often less cookie cutter than those along the sides in order to accommodate the ship’s superstructure. You will often find oddly shaped or elongated cabins with extra large balconies.

Aft cabins, which are cabins found at the back of the ship, have some of the largest balconies on a cruise ship. This is because there are usually just a few rooms lined up along the back of a ship, giving each one more space for a bigger balcony. In particular, aft cabins located on the corners of the ship often have wraparound balconies, creating enough space for chairs, loungers and sometimes a small dining table.

Generally, standard inside and outside cabins will be your cheapest bets, with balcony cabins costing a bit more, and suites and anything higher being the most expensive. You can expect to pay more the more amenities and additions to service that you want. You'll find minisuites on many ships, which are a bit bigger than balcony cabins and more clearly defined sleeping areas and living spaces.

The Galapagos Islands meet you in your Penthouse Suite thanks to incredible floor-to-ceiling windows. The Penthouse comes with a separate bedroom with its own private veranda, a spacious living room, and a sitting area with two sofa beds. Soak in the jacuzzi on your suite’s veranda while you sail between the islands. It’s an excellent option for entire families on a quest to experience the Galapagos in the height of luxury.

Does Cruise Control Save Gas? Unveiling the Truth About Fuel Efficiency Car, Vehicle & Truck Guides and Repair Journals

is cruise control fuel efficient

Cruise control maintains a constant speed without need for constant pressure on the accelerator. While cruise control can be helpful in many cases, there are occasions when you may not want to use it, including drives through hilly or rocky terrain. Many systems are unable to keep up with the changing inclines, which could decrease your fuel efficiency. In addition, although not related to fuel efficiently, remember that cruise control could be compromising when used in weather conditions like rain, ice and snow. The cruise control system relies on a speedometer and a servo mechanism to work. When you set a speed, the system maintains it by controlling the throttle.

Cruises

Just like its predecessor, Adaptive Cruise Control can maintain a set speed. But it also does something more—it can automatically adjust the speed of your car to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Humans naturally struggle to maintain a constant speed while driving, especially over long distances. Cruise control, being a computerized system, can keep your car at a steady pace. This consistency makes your driving smoother and even contributes to smoother traffic flow when multiple vehicles use cruise control. For example, the feature is only fuel-efficient if used on flat roads or mostly level highways that do not have any traffic congestion.

Traffic Conditions

Highways, on the other hand, offer a more consistent flow of traffic, allowing you to maintain a steady speed and improve your fuel efficiency. So, whenever possible, try to avoid congested areas and opt for routes with smoother traffic flow. Cruise control is a system that allows the driver to set their car to drive at a specific speed. The driver selects the speed, then takes their foot off the accelerator, and the vehicle will cruise at the set speed.

Their perspective can shed even more light on the experience you can expect. Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. The 2024 Hyundai Elantra and 2024 Toyota Corolla are old rivals in affordable compact cars.

When you engage cruise control, your vehicle maintains a constant speed, which helps optimize your fuel consumption. By eliminating unnecessary acceleration and deceleration, cruise control ensures that your engine operates at a consistent level of efficiency. This can lead to significant savings at the gas pump, especially during long highway drives. Cruise control is designed to help people traveling long distances drive comfortably, but it can also help save gas money.

These differences may seem trite, but over a period of time, acceleration and deceleration can eat up more gas as compared to traveling as a steady constant speed. Whether you use a travel agent or not, make sure to maximize your credit card points when paying for the cruise by using a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases. This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which offers 3 Ultimate Rewards points on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit). There's also the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, which brings 2 Ultimate Rewards points on travel and 3 Ultimate Rewards points on dining. Carnival has been rolling out faster Wi-Fi systems across its fleet in the last couple of years, such that you can now stream video on some ships. Pricing changes over time, but the fastest "premium" service on Carnival vessels was recently priced at $21.25 per day when bought in advance ($25 per day when bought onboard).

Does Cruise Control Save Gas? Is It Better For Gas Mileage?

is cruise control fuel efficient

And the worst part is that, with inflation, gas prices are going higher and higher with no relief in sight. Adaptive cruise control was invented in 1990 by William Chundrlik and Pamela Labuhn. In fact, the Natural Resources Canada conducted a study on the effects of using cruise control compared to not using it. This is particularly helpful when driving long distances, especially on long freeways.

Is cruise control bad for your car?

is cruise control fuel efficient

The first rudimentary versions of cruise control appeared in the late 19th century, but the modern version was invented in the 1940s by Ralph Teetor, a blind mechanical engineer. His goal was to stop the jerky speed adjustments made by his chauffeur, which led to the invention of “Speedostat”, later known as cruise control. The less gas is used, the less pollution is released into the environment.

At the same speed a roof box adds 39%, making your vehicle much less fuel efficient. Interestingly, the most fuel-efficient roads in the country are not quiet extra-urban dual carriageways or 20mph city streets, they are motorways. This is where you can leave the car in top gear and gently cruise along, using minimal fuel.

In addition to maintaining a consistent speed, cruise control can also help reduce speed variations. When driving without cruise control, it’s common to experience speed fluctuations due to external factors such as traffic conditions or changes in terrain. However, with cruise control, your vehicle automatically adjusts its speed to compensate for these variations, providing a smoother and more controlled driving experience. By minimizing speed fluctuations, cruise control enhances both your comfort and safety on the road.

Keep reading to figure out whether it could work for your driving style. On hilly terrain, we must understand that our vehicle’s cruise control may cause more fuel to be consumed when attempting to maintain a constant speed uphill. We can’t ignore the effects of weather on cruise control performance, especially during rain or snow. When roads are slippery, maintaining a consistent speed with cruise control can be risky. In this section, we uncover the nuances of advanced cruise control systems, focusing on how adaptive cruise control enhances safety and optimizes fuel efficiency.

Other extra-charge eateries often found on Carnival vessels include Bonsai, an a la carte sushi restaurant (now on 14 ships), and JiJi Asian Kitchen, which costs $24 per person (now on four ships). This is a notable change for the brand from just a couple of decades ago. There was a time when Carnival operated some of the biggest cruise ships in the world. In light of fuel cost increases, the technique of hypermiling has been gaining popularity as fuel economy best practice. This is why the RAC’s Record Road Trip team kept going almost continuously, only stopping for 20 minutes at a time on the way to setting a world record of driving through 14 countries on one tank of fuel.

If your car goes slower than the set speed, like going up a hill, the system increases throttle to speed up. When going downhill, it reduces throttle to slow down, keeping your car at the same speed you set. The reason why cruise control can help to save gas is that when accelerating or decelerating by placing the foot over the pedals the engine uses more gas. However, using cruise control when driving eliminates the need to constantly use the accelerator, either when speeding up or slowing down. You can just set up the optimal speed and drive in a higher gear on a lower RPM level. Keeping the revs in a flat line is also crucial for your fuel economy, and cruise control lets you drive at a steady RPM rate.

There are some disadvantages to consider, especially when it comes to city driving, weather conditions, and the age of your vehicle. This will help both the environment and your pocket, going a small step closer to sustainable development. On a recent drive from Detroit to New York, Sinclair said he once again pondered whether cruise control saves gas. Additionally, the cruise control system is often designed to operate more efficiently than an average driver, making subtle adjustments to optimize fuel use. However, its effectiveness can diminish in hilly terrains or congested traffic, where the system may need to overcompensate, potentially negating the fuel-saving benefits. Adaptive cruise control systems in modern cars can even recognize another vehicle in case you get too close to it, but it’s still best if you use cruise control with a dose of precaution.

Sail a few longer voyages, like a transatlantic sailing, and you could reach it even sooner. Note that, in contrast to airline frequent flyer programs, cruise line loyalty programs do not require you to requalify for status every year. However, it's not as difficult as it might at first seem to hit the more rewarding higher-level tiers in just a few years if you're cruising a lot.

Cruise control was a big deal in the automotive industry back in the day, as it made the first step towards autonomous driving. Well, at least it does so with the latest forms of adaptive cruise control, but you can enjoy the benefits of standard cruise control in your everyday driving. We’ll explore how cruise control works, its benefits, and how to use it for optimal fuel economy. However, that’s not the case in vehicles that don’t have traction control, which includes most produced before it became mandatory in 2011.

This gives passengers more internal square footage while offering a more customizable balcony experience. Celebrity Apex ship is part of the current revolution for Celebrity, which for years has pushed the bar when it comes to design and delight. For the second of its Edge-class ships, the cruise line partnered with some big-name designers -- including Kelly Hoppen and Jouin Manku -- to bring an airy, modern feel to every space onboard, inside and out. And while the 2,910-passenger ship is fancy, it's not stuffy – there's a relaxed vibe throughout. For Travelers On a BudgetCelebrity Apex's inside cabins offer a nice bang for your buck.

Eden Lounge

The cruise port of Southampton features tons of diverse attractions that provide insight into England’s culture and storied past, including fortresses, gardens and national parks. Due to the global COVID crisis, in March 2020, Celebrity decided to take a "Virtual Delivery" of the vessel via video conference with the shipyard's officials. The online event was held on March 27th and attended by Dimitris Kafetzis (cruise ship's Captain), Lisa Lutoff Perlo (Celebrity Cruises' CEO) and Laurent Castaing (shipbuilder's General Manager). Celebrity Apex Inaugural Cruise was re-scheduled for May 20th (initially planned for April 1st).

Eden is a dinner favorite for its live performances in the cocktail lounge and the creative menu of international dishes, including numerous plant-based options. Eden Cafe has some grab-and-go bites like paninis and salads; and Mast Grill has burgers and fries by the pool. Designed by Kelly Hoppen, MBE, our Edge Villas offer two levels of breathtaking views and erases the boundaries between inside and outside living space. A small bar and dining area are available for passengers looking for a tipple or a bite (you won't find a better burger onboard). Servers cater to your every whim, delivering drinks and icy-cold towels as needed. Our biggest nit to pick -- and it's a pretty minor one for these otherwise breathtaking staterooms -- is some design choices favor form over function. For example, rocking chairs in some suites have a large footprint that can cause tripping among even the most sure-footed guests, and oddly placed bathroom telephones that hang the cord over the toilet paper roll. All cabins come with two twin beds that can be combined to form a queen-sized bed, nightstands, interactive TV, closet, safe, refrigerator, desk and chair, sofa, dresser, and power and USB outlets -- U.S. and European. Bathrooms have amenities in large bottles -- lotion, shampoo and conditioner -- as well as bars of soap.

We're fans of these balconies, but some traditionalists miss the true veranda experience, which offers more of the outdoors. Setting off for the first time in 2020 with enough cabins for around 3,000 passengers, this is the second in the new Edge class of ships for Celebrity. Like sibling Celebrity Edge, this ship has the famous Magic Carpet bar that rises up and down the side of the ship like an elevator—plus a rooftop garden and grill. There are a few subtle differences though, which include the first Montblanc luxury store at sea, unique art and sculpture pieces around the ship, and a slightly redesigned Solarium area.

Ther is an expansive outdoor space - where you'll find a private hot tub, stylish furnishings, and a covered, double daybed. This is a lively spot in the central atrium where the bartenders are more like jugglers and magicians pouring, serving, and stacking drinks to great applause beneath a gigantic LED chandelier. Sunset Bar in the back of the ship is another go-to place for the views, and late-night hours in the disco keep the party fueled up. At least once during the sailing, it’s worth riding The Magic Carpet with a cocktail in hand while perched along the edge of the ship (I was especially jealous of those that opted to do so while in Santorini). Despite all the nightlife action, there is very little noise disturbance when you’re in your stateroom. Celebrity Apex®, the second in our Edge® Series ships, offers the widest range of staterooms in our fleet.

The bathroom was also spacious and there were plenty of storage areas in the stateroom. Enjoy the great outdoors—and stunning ocean views—with the luxury of your own private veranda. And, with our state-of-the-art technology, you can precisely adjust nearly every comfort feature of your room. The ship also offers infinite verandas, staterooms that have a modified approach to the traditional balcony.

One thing we found lacking overall was sufficient space for hanging wet clothing and towels; we could have used more hooks. Celebrity Apex itineraries also include the glittering coasts of the Mediterranean and the unveiled destinations of the Norwegian Fjords, Iceland, British Isles and more. All staterooms are fitted with keyless cabin entry technology that uses digital keys (on smartphones), as well as standard keycards and RFID bands. With a rounded stage and wrap-around seats, the theater aboard Celebrity Apex is a game changer. For guests staying in the Retreat cabins, there is a reserved section on the mezzanine—but there are really no bad seats either way.
